Dean and Jerry’s father, Patrick Martin owned a carpet store called C&M Sales. C&M Sales often received damaged freight that came up from Georgia on common carrier trailers that mixed rolls of carpet with other freight that caused damage to the carpet. Patrick saw a need to change the way carpet was shipped and started Road and Rail Trucking Co.. Road and Rail Trucking Co. only carried carpet on their trailers thus eliminating the damage caused by mixing freight.
Because of their connections with the carpet mills in Dalton Georgia Dean and his father started a small carpet store in Comstock Park Michigan called Wheel and Deal Carpets. Their store only carried in stock remnants and special buys of carpet from Dalton Georgia. The store was designed to offer high end carpets at a deep discounted price that catered to residential remodeling customers. Wheel and Deal Carpets, now West River Carpets, Inc., grew rapidly.
Dean and his Father continued to grow the business and after several years Dean’s father retired and Jerry Martin, Dean’s brother, started working at West River Carpets, Inc.. Now Thirty two years later Dean and his brother Jerry Own West River Carpets, Inc and employ five other family members. It now is a full service flooring and design store.
With the combination of C & M Sales, Road and Rail Trucking Co., Wheel and Deal Carpets, and West River Carpets, Inc. the family has been involved in flooring for over 50 years!
