Sgt John Rice VFW 6316 received its Charter from the National Department of Veterans of Foreign Wars on November 10, 1959. The Post was named after an American Indian war hero who was killed in action in 1950. Sgt John Rice was returned to Sioux City, Iowa in 1951 for burial. This Burial was denied because he wasn’t Caucasian. His body was taken to Winnebago lands where the tribe waited for Truman to arrange his burial in Arlington National Cemetery. Sgt John Rice was a 10 year Army Native American Veteran who had earned the Purple Heart and other honors during World War II and the Korean war. Our post has gone through many changes over the years. Today our membership is over 400 strong and supported by the addition of the Women’s Auxiliary, Men's Auxiliary and Cooties. These groups help to support the goals and activities of the Post. They assist with support for our troops, veterans, members in need and our community. Together we have supported many thousands of people over the years, and plan on doing so for many years to come.
