From the Caribbean to Novi
On the sunny southeastern Caribbean coast of Puerto Rico, rainforest-covered mountains provide the perfect terrain and conditions to grow the most flavorful coffee on Earth.
184 years ago, Corsican-French brothers Nicolas and Vicente Plaud immigrated to this idyllic location and established a farm, the Hacienda Catalina estate, in the shadow of the Montana Santa. Through 7 generations, the Plaud family has been growing some of the highest quality coffee there, under the shade of guava and mango trees.
Nestled between the 6,800- acre Carite State Forest, and a privately run 1,000-acre sustainable forestry non-profit, the farm is irrigated by a spring-fed river that emerges from the mountain less than two miles away, and flows gently down to the azure-blue waters of the Caribbean Sea.
Our newest partner, Maria Plaud, grew up immersed in authentic coffee culture. Her parents grew coffee on the farm, harvested and dried it on the roof of the farmhouse, and sold it in local markets. Her mother roasted coffee for home use the old-fashioned way, on the stovetop. It was common to brew the coffee using either a moka pot (a small portable espresso maker), or a colador (a cloth sieve through which water and coffee were poured). Maria fine-tuned her skills by obtaining a barista certification at the most well-respected barista institute in her hometown of San Juan.
Now, we are excited to bring this 184-year tradition of coffee excellence to Novi Coffee & Tea, as Maria joins the shop as our majority partner. Stay tuned for further details, but our plans include roasting our own beans (including coffee produced at the Patillas farm), renewed focus on specialty craft coffee menu items, and a revised food menu.
