Kitchen Lighting Considerations
The kitchen provides an interesting challenge for professional designers, installers, and do-it-yourselfers alike. In no other room, perhaps, is the marriage of form and function in lighting design more important.
Kitchen lighting can go a long way in setting the mood of the dining experience for family and friends, but it should also makes things a little easier for the chef of the house when he or she gets down to the business of cooking. The easiest way to reconcile these two functions of kitchen lighting is to approach the design as a layering process.
Start by focusing on the several areas of importance within the kitchen: the dining space, food prep area/sink, and countertops. When approaching the dining area, you can choose from countless light fixtures and lamp styles to create a look that plays off your kitchen dcor to form an atmosphere that encourages conversation and interaction around the kitchen table.
Requirements for the food prep area and countertops are a little different. While you want to complement the lighting in the dining area, you also need the lights to serve a more practical purpose. Lighting touches such as multi-pendants and mini pendants can clean up dark spaces, providing increased visibility for anyone who is working with measuring cups, cook books, and sharp knives.
Layering allows you to create a unique look in your kitchen without sacrificing continuity or practicality. Each section has its own purpose and needs, but through subtle design touches, you can link each area to the others.
Lighting gives you the ability to transform the look of your kitchen without having to completely remodel. However, the design and installation of kitchen lighting isn't an easy task. It always helps to consult with professionals before making changes to a room that plays such a major role in your home.
