Kitchen Counter and Countertop Considerations

Kitchen counters are the room element that will most show the wear and tear in the space. This is due to the heavy use, as well as exposure to heat, moisture, staining and abrasions. Modern homebuyers want both durable and beautiful surfaces that work to create an attractive and functional kitchen. In addition to kitchens providing one of the best returns on investment as compared to other remodeling projects, putting extra into quality countertops will provide the longevity and appearance buyers want and set your home apart.

There are various choices when it comes to materials that can be used for kitchen countertops, each providing varying quality and budgetary benefits.

Plastic Laminate - Plastic laminate countertops are the most widely used in homes across America. This is due to the relatively inexpensive price point, durability and access to vendors. One can easily find a varying mix of colors, styles and designs to mesh with the overall kitchen.

Ceramic Tile - Tile makes for a great kitchen counter surface. It holds up well and is easy to maintain. Well laid ceramic tile provides an attractive surface that opens the door for more personalized kitchen countertop design, and a material that will withstand the consistent use.

Granite Countertops - Likely the most popular material used in modern kitchen remodels is granite. Granite provides the best of both worlds when looking at form and function. While more expensive, granite counters are beautiful, long lasting, and are what homebuyers are looking for.

Concrete - A relatively new material for kitchen countertops is concrete. Concrete is clearly durable, and with modern methods of pressing and staining the material is finding widespread use in modern kitchens. Virtually any color or design can be achieved using concrete kitchen counters.

Composite Countertops - Another emerging material being used in countertop manufacturing is solid composite. These nonporous materials are highly resistant to abrasion and heat, and blemishes can generally be easily rubbed out. While currently limited in design and color choices, more is certainly on the horizon.

As with the cabinets, carefully map out counter space to accomplish the goals of the kitchen. Consider where you do dishes, put up groceries, prepare food, and other various activities in the kitchen. As with all remodeling efforts, plan well and you will get the most out of your room.
