Bathroom Shower and Tile Considerations

Showers can be both elegant and very effective at providing you a place to freshen up. With arguably more Americans taking showers for reasons from convenience to energy conservation, the shower has evolved from its place as the nozzle at the end of the tub. Bathroom showers offer many choices when it comes to configuration, construction materials, and fixtures.

Shower Configuration - First and foremost, is the shower part of the bathtub? In most cases, these are manufactured products we find in most middle priced homes. Pre-manufactured walk in shower stall are also readily available and relatively inexpensive. Depending on the amount of space, custom showers can be constructed using various materials, fixtures and shower head configurations. Nozzles mounted in the ceiling or dual shower heads can provide any customization needed for water slow. Various shapes can be used, with spaces for benches and other accessories.

Shower Materials - To remodel a shower beyond the simple installation of a pre-manufactured product requires the selection of a material to line the walls and floor of the space. Showers are most commonly covered with ceramic tile of varying sizes, with smaller tiles on the floor in order to increase traction. Tile can be arranged to create designs utilizes different colors and tiles cuts. Many modern and upscale shower remodels use other types of stone such as slate, marble and concrete to create an earthy yet elegant feel to the bathroom.

Fixtures - Shower fixtures include faucets, shower heads and accessories. There are many faucet configurations including single direction, dual handle, or dual controlled. These can be selected based on their utility and appearance. Shower heads include basic one stream nozzles we find in the average home, massage units including removable nozzles, and ceiling mounted circles raining water from above. Consider shower heads that can control water pressure, as well as emerging products with temperature controls. Consider additional accessories such as storage and towel racks out of distance from the shower stream.

The shower is a place of great relaxation and how you use it should be reflected in your remodeling designs. Bathrooms can have a great impact on the resale value of your home, and the shower is an opportunity to differentiate your home while providing great use.
