Design Corner - Styling - Rustic

rusticRemember the winter your family rented the cabin in the wilderness, and remember the animal heads hanging on the wall and the animal hide area rugs? This is a rustic style of decor. Think cabin in the mountains and a tucked away ski lodge. With tin pots for cooking, southwestern style tapestries and throw blankets, this style has a very comfortable elegance. Keeping four main elements in mind is sure to give you the old cabin feel: color, fabrics, furniture, and accessories.

Color - When choosing colors for this space, look to nature for your inspiration. Focus on using the deep, warm colors of nature. Think deep brown, red, blue, and forest green. You will want to see all of these colors in the space. This style of decor has a broad color palette and known to be very colorful.

Fabrics - Fabrics are a wonderful way to bring texture and warmth into your space. Use faux leathers in ostrich, crocodile, and suede to add rustic sophistication to your space. For a child's space, you can use juvenile patterns for bed linens with a repeating moose pattern. For an adult's space, try loosely stitched Navajo blankets and throw pillows made of many deep colors and patterns for a mature feel. This style is extremely textural so do not overdo your space, but don't be afraid to add some texture with your fabrics and upholstery.

Furniture - Look for heavy wood pieces in teak and oak. Using bent willow chairs around a grand old oak table is perfect. Wrought iron furniture accents are also seen repeatedly in this style. Bring the elements of nature indoors with furniture made of only natural materials. Log furniture will give you a feeling of being at a lodge. Having a stone fireplace or furniture made of leather will help bring the outdoor elements indoors.

Accessories - Go easy using stuffed animal heads and hides. Placing too many of these items in your space will make you feel overcrowded, so moderation is the key. Moose antlers are a great choice for a chandelier. Another good idea is to use picture frames and dishes made of river pebbles. The main thing to keep in mind is bringing outdoor elements indoors. Sticks and branches are a wonderful material to make an ornate wall hanging.

Remember, this style is fun and alive, so incorporating nature into all corners of the room will surely get your rustic room's heart pumping. Now, light up a nice fire and snuggle up under your Navajo blanket with your cup of coco and enjoy the wildlife.
