Design Corner - Styling - Old World

old_worldWhen choosing to design your home with an Old World feel, keep your eye out for timeworn pieces with old world elegance. Think of the words antique and vintage. Some say that an Old World style home feels stuffy and dingy, but in fact it is the complete opposite, it has grace, style, and elegance. A home decorated in this decor has a very rich, yet feminine feel, and above all is very classy. Think of the upper deck on the Titanic or an old Opera House. There are many things to consider when styling with this theme: Colors, Fabrics, Furniture and Accessories.

Colors - The colors associated with this style of design are rich, warm earth tones. Deep browns, beiges, reds and greens will fit in beautifully. When choosing your wall color go with something on the neutral side yet with a rich feel. Beiges and browns are your best bet. Choosing a neutral wall color will allow for the intricate antique furniture pieces and patterns to stand out and be the focal point of the space. These antique pieces are what will scream Old World style. The charming details of an Old World space will cozy up the room.

Fabrics - When choosing your fabrics for this space do not be afraid to go heavy. Using velvet, cotton and burlap are wonderful fabric choices. Choosing a deep red velvet or suede couch would look beautiful. You can always soften up the space by throwing in lighter fabric accents. For example, throw pillows or drapery made of deep colored silk or linen gives the room a slight feminine feel you are trying to accomplish. Patterns also play a huge role in this decor as well. Consider placing a patterned sitting chair in the corner beside your red suede couch with a couple silk throw pillows of an accenting color and your space is on its way! Some great patterns will be plaids or repeating flower themes.

Furniture - Furniture will play a huge role in finishing off your look. Look for pieces with intricate wood carvings and details. For example, an end table hand carved from wood or finding an old refinished wooden sofa with the deep red suede mentioned above will fit in perfectly. You can make this fun by going antiquing or to second hand shops - don't forget you can always refinish the older pieces you find. You want pieces with a dated, yet clean feel. Again, keep antique and vintage in mind when shopping for furniture pieces.

Accessories - This is where you really add the Old World flair. Some great pieces to add to your decor include: throw pillows with tassels, fancy sterling silver and china, crystal, bronze, and marble items. Focus on strategically placing and spacing throughout your room to capture the energy of old world. Make sure to always choose items that compliment your design style and avoid making your space too cluttered.

Old world decor has an involved elegance about it. It is not too simple and not too busy. It is the art of combining old world antiques and rich colors. Keep in mind these simple considerations when portraying this style and you are sure to capture the Old World style.
