Design Corner - Styling - Italian

italian_stylingItalian decor is one of the most popular designs today in American homes. Known to be very grand with a rich, relaxing and romantic feel, Italian design is found in many traditional style homes. Italian style uses heavy fabrics, deep colors, and intricate stone work to feel very expensive while giving a breathtaking Tuscan feel.

Colors - Italian decor colors include intensely warm earth tones. Deep browns, reds, and greens are a great place to start when choosing a color palette. Painting your space a deep shade of beige and then a deep chocolate brown accent wall would be a great backdrop to begin your Italian style decor. Add Italian stone crown molding around the room and it will give the room a comfortable, inviting feel.

Flooring - Italian inspired spaces can be anything from stone to hardwoods. Stone flooring is a beautiful touch, but can be hard on the feet. Installing the stone in smaller rooms like entry ways, bathrooms, and kitchens will be easier on your feet and not make your home feel cold, since stone looses heat faster than other materials. You can find a wide range of stone flooring from natural stone to granite to marble. A great idea is to carry the stone work to backsplashes, countertops, and into the shower as well. Installing hardwoods throughout the rest of the living space in your home will keep the casual, luxurious feel of Italian decor. Throw some Italian inspired area rugs and consider your home a Tuscan Villa!

Lighting - Keep lighting warm and inviting. Using Halogen lights will provide the warm glow an Italian country side home would remind you of. Keep lighting controlled by installing a dimmer switch, which will give you the versatility to use brighter lighting when needed.

Accessories - Accents in this style tend to focus on food and wine. Try hanging wall art in your kitchen resembling food or cooking. Oil based paintings of vineyard landscapes or cobble-stoned walkways through Venice are ideal. Adding a wine rack showcasing your bold reds and cool whites is a must! Always have a minimum of four wine glasses handy, because Italian culture loves to entertain in groups. Grow some fresh herbs on a window sill and your space will be Italian inspired for sure.

Furniture - For this design style think less is more. Focus on a few grand pieces of furniture. Think heavy fabric and intricate wood work, keeping with the deep earth tone color palette. Add a deep red throw blanket and a couple of throw pillows and the rich Italian feel will surely be found.

Italian style boasts deep colors and warmth. There is always an inviting feel to the space. Casual comfort and relaxation are never to be forgotten when using this gorgeous style.
