Styling - Guy's
Gone are the old days when guy's did not care about style. Today's guy is into style as much as women. Since the metro sexual male has evolved, guy's decor has been growing. There are many elements to make a space feel masculine, yet still have an immaculate style. The four key elements which contribute to making a space more guy friendly are: color, texture, fabric, and furniture.
Colors - Focus on masculinity. Colors come in many shades and tints so it is difficult to say one color is more masculine than another. Masculine colors are often deeper and richer shades of an individual color such as navy blue, hunter green or cranberry. You can also choose a softer shade of one color for three of the walls and then on the fourth wall, accent it by painting it at least 2-3 shades deeper of the same color. For example, on three of the walls paint a soft blue color and then on the accent wall paint a rich dark blue. This approach adds depth to the space.
Textures and Fabrics - Look for heavier and richer materials. Try adding deep red or forest green floor length drapes. Hanging the deep red or forest green against chocolate brown walls will add a great contrast. Make sure you do not paint the accent wall on the same wall that you will hang the drapes; you'll want to balance the heavier elements. In this case the heavier elements would be the accent wall and the deep floor length drapes. Another idea is to add texture such as new plaster techniques to the ceilings for a more masculine feel.
Furniture - Pay attention to larger and heavier pieces. Large, dark wood carved pieces and suede or leather upholstery can add the masculine feel you are looking for. Color blocking deep shades of colors can also give you that masculine look. For example, use an oversized deep red suede couch and chair to compliment your chocolate walls and forest green drapes. You can break up the color blocking with smaller detailed accessories like picture frames, ceramic pieces, throw blankets and pillows. The key here is to not combine too many colors, so maintain a maximum of three different solid color pallets.
Even though you want your space to feel masculine, do not be afraid to add a few more feminine accessories. The large furniture pieces in this space make a strong impression, so use small accents and accessories such as photos and books to add some softness to reduce the feeling of being overbearing. Making your colors, furniture, textures, and fabrics masculine is sure to bring your guy decor together, regardless if your wife sneaks in a flower vase.
