Design Corner - Styling - Green

greenDecorating Green is not only the newest trend, but runs a lot deeper than a trend; it is great for our environment. Preserving our earth is not only a great thing, but it is vital! We do not want to take chances when it comes to Mother Earth.

Paint - Decorating green can be done in many ways. You will be surprised the number of areas you can improve on when in comes to being green. The place to start is with the paint, you can choose clay based paint or soy based paint, either one is readily available in today's market. Theses paints lack the harmful agents, like acrylic based petroleum, which can be detrimental to the environment. Choosing colors inspired by nature will give your space the organic, green feel.

Flooring - You can find "green" approved products for nearly all aspects of design. Flooring is also an area you can design "green" approved. Choose from cork, bamboo, natural linoleum, or wood. Theses options are both beautiful and great for the environment. You can also find wood floor sealer that is zinc free, which would be green approved. Using a bamboo floor with sage green clay-based paint would give your space an organic feel for sure.

Linens and Tapestries - When it comes to choosing your linens and tapestries you can find many fabrics that are good for the environment. Any fabrics made of natural or organic fibers will be green approved. Not only are theses fabrics more affordable than synthetics, like silk and cashmere, they will also give your space the feeling of nature. Add sand colored organic floor length draperies against your sage walls and bamboo floor, and you will be remarkably green.

Energy Conservation - Choosing lighting and appliances can add to the green factor as well. Energy conservation is the key when designing a green space. Lighting up a space has a big impact on the way we feel. Lighting will become green approved depending on the kind of bulbs, fixtures, and energy used. Compact fluorescent bulbs, and light emitting diodes are the best way to go. They cost a little more but the money you save on energy definitely makes up for the higher initial price. When shopping for lamps keep your eyes out for natural, reused, or recycled materials. Also, when you are not using your plug-ins or lights unplug them. Electrical devices are constantly pulling energy even when not turned on.

Decorating green can be easy and fun. Almost everything on the market can be found in green approved materials today. Look for anything made of natural or organic fiber, anything reused or recycled, and often products will even say "green" approved on them. This may take a little extra time and digging, but isn't Mother Earth worth it?
