Design Corner - Styling - Country Western

countrywestern_stylingRemember the summer family vacation at a dude ranch in Wyoming? Remember all those fun, playful yet relaxing feelings you had while there? When designing a country western themed room you will want to think back to trips like those. Think of all the details and accessories inspired by nature. Hand carved wood furniture has an inviting feel and is also fun and warm. Designing in this theme is a wonderful, relaxing way to invite family and friends into your home.

Flooring - Consider hardwoods or dark laminate flooring for the rustic feel. Also add western inspired rugs which are relatively easy to find. The fabric found in these rugs is usually a heavy rope-like yarn stitched together in western inspired patterns. Finish the rug off with tassels on the corners and you're on your way.

Woods and Metals - The two main materials often seen within a country western design style are woods and metals. The wood usually associated with Country Western is a light butt with a deep honey color to it. The wood is often hand carved and has a worn, used finish to it. Wrought iron is a metal that is repeatedly seen in this style as well. Black and darker metals are a great choice because they add rustic detailing. The colors often used to accent country-western style spaces are the rich colors that can be found in nature. The most common colors are brick red, navy, red, terra cotta, and forest green.

Lighting - You want to keep the warm glow you see when out on a ranch. Old lanterns work perfect for table top lamps or chandelier made out of antlers will give any space an outdoor ranch feel. Wagon wheels are also a good touch, whether you hang them on the wall or use them as a base for a floor lamp; they will make you feel like you're on the set of a John Wayne movie.

Accessories - Wall art is a wonderful way to add authenticity to a country western room. Second hand stores or tack shops are great places to find original pieces. Finding a branding iron or anything made of animal skins would be a perfect find. If you do not have the memories of a country-western trip take a ride to the closest farm or stable and walk around for some inspiration. If you are brave enough to ask, they might even have some old horse shoes you can clean and hang on the wall for added effect. Accessories can be anything from old cowboy boots and hats to animal inspired memorabilia. Western animals would be horses, deer, cattle, moose, and fish.

The main thing to remember when choosing pieces for this decor is to have fun, be comfortable and capture nature anyway possible. Picture yourself on a ranch with tumbleweeds blowing around and a cowboy singing beside the bonfire in the distance.
