Design Corner - Styling - British India

britishindia_stylingWhen you think of belly dancers and elephants British Indian decor should come to mind. British Indian design is very intricate with tapestries and very colorful fabrics accenting with bright gold and silver. There are four main elements to consider when portraying the British Indian theme to your home: color, fabrics, furniture and accessories.

British Indian decor was shaped when the British Empire ruled India. This style boasts both the English love of wood and heavy Victorian draperies, mixed in with typical Indian motifs and materials like reed and ivory. By mixing the two worlds together, "old" world in England and the "new" influences of Indian culture, you get a very unique and beautiful design.

Colors - Think of the colors of a sunset; burnt oranges, smoky reds and pinks, and calming yellows. Then, mix these colors in with deep mahogany furniture pieces to balance the better of the two styles. Paint your walls a neutral color, such as a cream or light brown so that the intricate fabrics and wood pieces will stand out against them. Painting your walls a color too loud will make your space feel chaotic and cluttered.

Furniture - This is where the British influenced the most. First, look for a dark leather couch with gold studs to strategically place in your room. Second, add in a chest as a table or corner piece. Finally, placing a trunk at the end of your bed or using it as an end table will fit in gracefully.

Fabrics and Accessories - This is where Indian influence played a major role. The British went to the local Indian markets for their fabrics and tapestries. Ornate woodcarvings and statues of elephants are found to go along with this style. Adding silk wall hangings made of intricate Indian inspired patterns will look amazing against the heavy furniture pieces. Velvet throw pillows and drapery will round out your room and pick up your accent colors.

The mixing of heavy furniture pieces, inexpensive accents, and art pieces with a typical Indian influence will be the basis for this style of design. Now, pour a smooth glass of Gin to go with your dish spiced with curry and relax to the enchanting sounds of middle-eastern instrumental music.
