50's Design Ideas

Design Corner - Styling - 50's

50s_stylingWhen decorating your home with a 50's style decor think vintage, old Hollywood glamour. Vintage can often be confused with Shabby Chic style, but is distinctively different in many ways. For example, Shabby Chic has worn and rough edges that can often portray the feeling of elegant and neglect. The 50's Vintage style decor has the power to bring back the feel of dinner at Grandma's house. High gloss, polished finishes and lace doilies are often found in this style of home. When designing in this style keep a few main elements in mind: colors, furniture and accessories.

Colors - There are many color combinations that can give your space a vintage feel. Painting your walls with color combinations of cream and green, red and white, or pink and blue would be a great color scheme for the 50's. You have many options when painting your wall two different colors. To give your walls a vintage feel install a chair rail and put heavily floral patterned wallpaper on the bottom half of the wall. Finally, paint the top half a complimenting color.

Furniture - A fun addition to any 50's style eat-in kitchen is to install a matching booth and table like in the old school diners. Cover the booth and table in a shiny red plastic and accent with chrome glass top. Now you are ready for a milkshake and fries any day. Any piece of furniture with chrome, glass accents and is upholstered in vinyl, plastic or acrylic would fit in perfectly. Brightly colored or neutral colors will both work great. Kick your feet up and watch an old movie like Grease to help find your inspiration.

Accessories - Accessories are where you are going to stand out with this style. Some great staple items to enhance the 50's feel would be:

  • gallon butter churns
  • butter molds
  • wire egg baskets
  • rug beaters
  • a display of old keys
  • colored canning jars
  • milk bottles
  • antique cookbooks
  • vintage pottery and canisters
  • tin breadboxes
  • vintage salt and pepper shakers

Great accessories for your living room and bedroom can include adding an old worn truck or toy chest. Places to find old accessories are at flea markets or second hand thrift stores. Anything crocheted, from pillows to throw blankets, padded hangers, antique water pitcher with matching dishes, will add tons of the vintage 50's character to your home.

50's style can be lots of fun. It can bring you back those old soda shop memories. Keeping the main elements like color, furniture, and accessories will help you capture the 50's mood.
