Western Region Gardening Design Ideas

Design Corner - Gardening - Western Region

westWhen it comes to gardening you must take into consideration your location to plan the best garden possible. Every region has different facts about the soil, rainfall, and climate to consider when making your choices on plants, flowers, fertilizer and placement. The western region of the United States tends to be drier than the east; however, has a milder climate to allow for more months in the year to grow your garden. The western landscapes range from coastal areas of California to the alpine meadows of the Rocky and Sierra Nevada mountains to the deserts of the Southwest.

Climate - The climate in the West varies strongly across the region. This area can vary from the desert like temperature to the Rock Mountain cold temperatures. Regardless of what region you are located in, research plays a key role in successfully planting in different climates. The average temperature in the west is between 40-70 degrees Fahrenheit. The biggest question is deciding on annuals or perennials? That is of course you have a climate cold enough to kill off your plants when it changes. If not, you are among the few lucky that can enjoy their beautiful garden year round.

Rainfall - Rainfall is another factor to pay attention to when making your plant selection in your garden. The west is drier than other regions of the United States so make your selections with this in mind. Some great plant selections that do very well in the drier climates are:

  • Pansies
  • Marigolds
  • Roses
  • Chili Plants
  • Daisies
  • Impatiens

These plants are perfect for the west's climate because they thrive with as little as one big rain per month!

Soil - The soil is also an important factor to keep in mind to grow a substantial garden. The soil found in the West has more clay compared to other regions so it's important to use the correct potting soil and fertilizers to provide your garden with the proper nutrients. Potting soil is a mixture of compost, peat moss and dirt that promotes proper drainage and holds the correct amount of water to feed your plants. Extra watering, when able will also help your plants to thrive in clay soil.

The west with its beautiful climates and gorgeous backdrops is a wonderful place to plan and plant a garden. The most important thing is to do your research on which plants grow the best in this region. Follow the simple tips above and you are on your way to a beautiful garden.
