Southeast Gardening Design Ideas

Design Corner - Gardening - Southeast

southeast_gardeningGardening varies depending on geographical locations. Soil, climate, and rainfall are key factors in which flowers can grow in an area. For example a cactus requires less water so they flourish in deserts. When gardening in the Southeast you will have to take climate, rainfall, and soil into consideration.

Climate - The Southeastern states include Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. The states that make up the Southeast are considered the wettest states in the US. They receive the most average rainfall per year. Since the Southeast has a cool and mild even in January it is a perfect location for lush, overgrown gardens.

The most popular tree that can only grow in climates similar to the Southeast is the famous Palm Tree. Palm trees are known to represent tropical climates and for their exotic appearance. Sunlight plays a major role for plants in the Southeast.

Some plants thrive in the shade while others require lots of sunlight.

  • Sunlight plants - Pagoda, Molimba, Superbells, Hibiscus, Hydrangea, Shasta Daisies, Petunias, Zinnia, and flowering maples are just a few to name of 100's of flowers and plants that do well in direct sunlight.
  • Shade Plants - Impatients, Aloe plants, Begonias, Coleus, Streptocarpella, and Feverfew are just a few of the plants and flowers that do better in partial sun or the shade in Southeast climates.

Rainfall - There is plenty of rain in the Southeast. The sticky, humid air felt year round is due to all the moisture. A lot of moisture in the air means a lot of water in the ground, which is great when it comes to planting and gardening. Most the precipitation that falls is cold rain from huge tropical storms. Tropical storms and thunderstorms develop from the warm humid air. Even though it rains often, it is still quite sunny in the southeast year round.

Soil - The soil in the Southeast is generally pretty moist. Even during a small drought the soil will stay wet. This is wonderful for plants and flowers that can thrive in year round moisture. On the other hand too much rainfall can harm your garden. If the rain washes your garden away usually your plants and flowers can bounce back.

Southeast boasts beautiful climates year round. It really is the ideal location to have a lush garden. Take advantage of the region and enjoy your tropical plants and flowers. Also, remember to always consider climate, sunlight, soil, and rainfall and you should be on your way to a beautiful garden.
