Gardening - Northeast
Gardening varies depending on geographical locations. Soil, climate, and rainfall are key factors in which flowers can grow in an area. For example a cactus requires less water so they flourish in deserts. When gardening in the northeast you will have to take the climate, rainfall, and soil into consideration.
Climate - Climate in the Northeast has heavy rainfalls and bitterly cold winters. The Northeastern states are Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland. When a region has different temperatures keep in mind to research your annuals and perennials plants. There are many different types of perennials and annuals to choose for your garden:
- Perennials: Plants that return for more than two blooming cycles in the spring including: Periwinkles, Ajugas, Creeping Buttercup, Crested Iris, Golden Moneywort, Lamium, Lily-of-the-Valley, Wild Ginger, and Lady's Mantle.
- Annuals: Plants that only bloom and live for one season and die in winter including: Bachelor's Buttons, Marigolds, Diascia, Larkspur, Petunias, Snapdragons, Viola, and Pansies.
Rainfall - Rainfall in the Northeastern states range anywhere from 32 inches to 50 inches per year and snowfall can reach over 100 inches. The best time to plant a garden is during the spring and summer months. There is plenty of rain during these months to nourish your flowers and plants; however, there may be periods of "dry times" when you may need to water your plants yourself using a sprinkler or hose.
Soil - The soil in the Northeastern states can range from very rocky coastlines to fertile farmland. Depending on your location you may have to add potting soil to the rockier land. Buying soil is a great option for any location because potting soil is engineered to include the proper nutrients necessary for plants and flowers to grow.
The Northeast is one of the most beautiful regions in United States boasting four true seasons a year. When planting a garden in this region take climate, soil, and rainfall into consideration to ensure beautiful flowers return every year.
