Easter is a Christian holiday that signifies Jesus' resurrection. It is Christ's victory over death and shows that there is eternal life for all who believe in him. Easter takes place in the spring time which signifies new birth and growth. Easter always takes place on a Sunday, so most people start their Easter Sunday off by attending church. Church celebrations on Easter are generally very elaborate and formal. When planning an Easter celebration, you should consider food and kid's activities.
Food - Traditional Easter Sunday food is a wide range. Because Easter is the day that signifies the end of a fasting, larger meals are normal. You should consider roast lamb, ham, scalloped potatoes, hot-crossed buns and hard-boiled eggs. An Easter tradition is to hard-boil eggs and decorate them using dye packages found in grocery markets. This can be fun for the whole family to join in on. Make sure the dye you choose is food safe in case you decide to eat the eggs later.
Kid's Activities - Set up an Easter egg hunt for the children. This will entertain the children for hours, which will give you time to cook for your guests. An Easter egg hunt is exactly what it sounds like. Around Easter time all stores sell hallow plastic eater eggs that open to allow you to put a treats inside. Hide a couple dozen throughout your back yard or home for the children to race around and find. The treats usually tucked inside consist of candy or coins.
Another tradition of Easter is making an Easter basket filled with candy and stuffed animal bunnies. The tradition of the Easter basket is closely connected to Western Christianity. In the Roman Catholic Church, Easter is only part of an entire season of rituals and observances that begin forty-six days of fasting from eggs, meat and dairy prior to Easter Sunday. Lent ends on Easter, and signifies a time where Christians celebrate by eating a larger heartier family meal. At one time, it was a tradition for Roman Catholic families to carry the food for Easter dinner to Mass in a basket, where it could be blessed by the priest. That is where the tradition of the Easter basket was born.
Easter represents a beautiful time for Christians. Combine family, prayer, good food and games and you are sure to have a memorable Easter Sunday.
