Design Corner - Entertaining - Baby Shower

babyshowerBaby Showers mean one thing - a baby is on the way! What an exciting time to celebrate. Bringing a new life into the world is one of the most precious times in a person's life. It is a happy, beautiful time. When decorating your home for a baby shower you want to capture these happy feelings and accentuate them. Colors, decorations, and food will play important roles when throwing a baby shower.

Color - Baby Showers are for the mothers to be, girlfriends, and women in the family. Because this event is primarily made of women, be as feminine and girly as you wish. If the mother to be has found out the sex of the baby you may want to decorate with the gender of the baby in mind. For example, if she is having a girl pink and yellow is a great choice and if she is having a boy blue and green is a great choice. If the mother to be has not found out what she is having you may want to go with more neutral colors like yellow. Custom invitations, thank you cards, centerpieces, and favors for the guest can all be coordinated with matching colors and themes.

Decorations and Games - Baby Showers are traditionally thrown about 1-2 months before the little bundle of joy arrives. For women only baby showers, make this event more girly and frilly. For coed baby shower where the father is involved, you may want to downplay the games and frills. There are many baby shower games to play, and typically 1-3 games are played. Here just a couple ideas to get you started:

1. Place 10 different baby food flavors into the bottom of a diaper. Each person will have a piece of paper listed 1-10. Pass the diaper around and have each girl smell the diaper and write their guess of which flavor of baby food it is. And the girl with the most correct answers wins the prize.

2. Pass around a spool of brightly colored ribbon and each girl has to guess the circumference of the expecting mother's belly. The girl that comes the closet when the Mother measures wins a prize.

3. Pass out a clothespin to each guest as they arrive, and if they say the word "baby" then they have to give their clothespin to the first person that caught them. The girl at the end of the party with the most clothespins wins a prize.

Prizes for your game winners can be anything from lotto tickets to scented lotions and candles.

Food - Food will also play an important role when throwing any party. When throwing a baby shower you will generally want to stick to finger foods and salads. Baby showers generally take place during the day and women will enjoy finger foods and salads more than a big, heavy, sit down meal. Setting up a buffet is a great idea. It's not only easier on the host but also encourages your guests to walk around and mingle. Beverages are usually coffee, punch or sodas. Out of the respect for the mother to be alcohol should not be served.

When throwing a baby shower keep in mind the main focus, which is the mother to be and welcoming her new bundle of joy. Make it girly and make it fun and your party is sure to be a hit.
