Hallway Design Ideas

Design Corner - Decorating - Hallway

hallwayHallways are called the highways of your home linking one room or space to the next. Hallways are generally narrow spaces, so you will not have many accessories or pieces of furniture. There are still many elements to consider when decorating your hallways where your personality can shine. The main elements to consider will be colors, flooring, lighting, and accessories.

Colors - You will want to choose the colors for this space to be light and bright. Due to the narrowness of hallways you will want to colors that will open up the space. Darker colors will do the exact opposite; they will make the space look smaller. Try choosing a soothing ice blue. Choosing a bright color will also help you and loved ones navigate down the halls in the evening accentuating ambient light.

Flooring - Most people keep the floors pretty basic in hallways. Carpet or hardwoods are the two primary choices. If you choose hardwood floors there might be a noise problem. If there is going to be heavy traffic at night you might want to choose carpet. Hardwoods do not soften the noise of shoes stomping away. Carpet would muzzle the sound of shoes to ensure that others will not be disturbed as well as retain heat better in cold climates. An alternative solution would be to place a carpet runner over the hardwood to combine the best of both worlds.

Lighting - You will want to have adequate lighting in your hallways. A great idea would be to install light switches on all ends of the hallways. This way you can turn the lights on and off at either end. Using decorative light fixtures or chandeliers is a great way to add your own personal touch. Remember to always hang your fixtures high so no one walking down the hall will bumps their head. Also, depending on the location you may want to provide soft lights along the floor to help residents and guests at night.

Accessories - Accessories for this space will be very limited. If you wish to add anything it is nice to hang up pictures down the hallway. A dramatic and bold way to liven up the space would be to have black and white photos in all black picture frames lining the hall. To personalize this aspect providing pictures you have taken yourself or of your family will be a great showpiece for your guests. Give your hallway a warm feel by adding oversized potted plants, or decorative sconces to elongate the room.

Keeping your hallways simple and uncluttered is the key. Remember, the hallways are used to get from room to room. Keeping the main four elements in mind; colors, flooring, lighting and accessories will help you accomplish the best results.
